That recently reported guerrilla attack in El Salvador may actually have been staged by Salvadoran government security forces themselves. Us officials are debating the origins and purpose of the June 27 nighttime attack at La Union, a town in eastern El Salvador across the Gulf of Fonseca from nicaragua. Guerrilla sources have denied that guerrillas were involved. One US State Department official says there are indications that the "attack" may have been a "put on" designed to gain sympathy in the United States for additional US aid to El Salvador.

Another version of what happened is that the outbreak of shooting involved an internal mutiny o f some sort.m
