One of our in-house veterans of World War II passed the window of a USO center the other day and was suddenly taken back to the days in uniform when friendly residents in lonely towns opened their homes and hearts to the sons and daughters of faraway strangers. Now comes word of the hundreds of responses to the Navy's new dial-a-sailor program, inviting residents of Chicago to call up and offer hospitality to the crew of a ship docking there. It suggests Americans know that their defenders in peacetime as well as in war can use a little family feeling now and then -- and anyone can display it without waiting to be asked.
