US official in India to review A-fuel deal

James Malone, assistant US secretary of state, arrived here for talks on a US agreement to supply nuclear fuel for India's Tarapur atomic power plant. Discussions were expected to center on whether to end the agreement and what to do with the spent fuel.

The agreement obligates the US to supply enriched uranium for the plant until 1993. But there have been numerous delays in supplies, and the Reagan administration has expressed doubt about supplying the fuel because India has not signed the nuclear nonproliferation treaty. Indian officials, reportedly in contact on the issue with scientists in the Soviet Union, indicate they might agree to end t he pact.
