Ukrainian boy who stayed behind seeks citizenship

Walter Polovchak, the Ukrainian schoolboy who ran away from home when his parents wanted to return to the Soviet Union, applied for permanent residency in the United States. The 13-year old was granted political asylum last year and embroiled in an international tug of war when he was placed in state custody.

The Soviet Union charged that he was being held hostage in the US. But the boy's attorney says Walter and his sister, Natalie, 18, have filed applications for perm anent residency and hope to become US citizens.
