Iowa troopers hunt arms and causes in prison riot
Fort Madison, Iowa
Thirty state troopers carrying shotguns searched the state penitentiary here Thursday for weapons used by inmates who took a dozen hostages, later released unharmed. The body of one inmate stabbed to death was found in the rubble after rampaging inmates tore down fences with a forklift truck and torched prison buildings.
Using homemade guns and knives to seize hostages, two small groups of inmates took hostages. Authorities had to negotiate separately for the release of the two groups of hostages and promised the inmates no "reprisals" if they released them. One group of inmates demanded a press conference in exchange for the hostages. The conference was held and the inmates complained about prison conditions.
