The top candidate to succeed Vernon Jordan as president of the National Urban League: outgoing Atlanta Mayor Maynard Jackson. Jackson is viewed as a man with charisma, the public's confidence, and the ability to raise funds -- a growing need for the league now that its biggest benefactor, the federal government, is cutting back.

Another Atlantan, state Sen. Julian Bond, also has national appeal and is in the running. And Patricia Roberts Harris, former secretary of HUD and HEW in the Carter administration, is being mentioned, too.

The strong field has dimmed the hopes of two men with Urban League experience , John E. Jacob, Jordan's top aide, and Ronald Brown, chief counsel to the Democratic National Committee.m
