PLO chief, in a first, meets with Suzuki

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat scored a diplomatic breakthrough Wednesday by meeting with Prime Minister Zenko Suzuki, the first leader of a Western-oriented industrial nation to receive the chief of the Palestine Liberation Organization.

Japanese leaders told Mr. Arafat that Middle East peace would not be possible without mutual recognition of the right of existence by Israel and the Palestinians.

Arafat put out a moderate signal to Israel, refusing to make warlike statements against the Jewish nation, and appealed to Japan to push for US recognition of the PLO.
