Drilling for oil in US going at record pace

Domestic drilling for oil and gas during the first nine months of 1981 continues at a record pace, Petroleum Information Corporation reports. US drilling during the first three quarters of the year totaled 54,265 wells with drilling completed. This total showed a 16 percent increase form the 1980 third-quarter mark: 45,595 completions. Drilling in 1980 reached a total of 62, 704 wells -- the highest number for a US drilling year. If drilling keeps up its present pace, that record will probably be passed by early next month.

Of completions during the first nine months, 27,237 were oil wells, 11,064 were gas, and 15,964 were dry. Oil wells showed an increase of 24.2 percent from the same period last year.
