Polish union leaders warn of general strike

Solidarity trade union leaders angered over the storming by police of a sit-in at a firefighters' cadet school said Thursday that Communist authorities had wrecked prospects for national accord and warned of a general strike.

A statement by union leaders said recent events, including Wednesday's assault by paramilitary police on the cadet academy in Warsaw, proved the government has rejected dialogue in favor of force.

It said the union would consider calling a general strike if the ruling Communists carried out a threat to order emergency powers which it said would amount to the elimination of civil and worker rights won in the 1980 labor revolt.
