4 new third-world entrants seek top position at UN

Four new third-world candidates have jumped into the race for the top UN job, bringing to nine the number of challengers vying for the slot thrown wide open because of a power struggle between China and the United States. The Security Council meets today (Dec. 11) to consider the new list.

The Security Council has been deadlocked since Oct. 27 in choosing a secretary-general because of China's veto of incumbent Kurt Waldheim, and the US veto of Tanzanian Foreign Minister Salim Ahmed Salim. Both have withdrawn from the race to break the logjam.
