GM early contract talks halted

The United Automobile Workers broke off early contract negotiations with General Motors Corporation Wednesday. UAW president Douglas Fraser said he was unlikely to recommend any more bargaining until mid-July.

Last week, in the first trial of early bargaining, GM and the UAW agreed to a novel concept under which car prices would be cut in the amount of concessions granted by the union.

There were indications Tuesday that the bargaining was not going well. Talks adjourned early Wednesday because bargainers lost their ''momentum,'' a UAW spokesman said.

Fraser and his bargaining team will now go to Ford Motor Company in hopes of reaching a settlement there. Union leaders had said they did not want two separate agreements with Ford and GM, but Mr. Fraser indicated they are now considering the possibility.
