43 L.A. teachers accused of theft

Forty-three Los Angeles school teachers will be charged with grand theft, accused of receiving credits and salary increases for college courses they never took, the district attorney's office said here.

The head of a school committee involved in the investigation said 54 other teachers may face similar charges, two teachers have been exonerated, and 13 have retired or resigned.

The accused are alleged to have obtained up to $3,000 each by claiming completion of courses they never attended. The district attorney's office alleges that without the knowledge of course instructors, college class lists were manipulated so people who did not attend courses could receive credit.
