Soviets launch space unit to replace Salyut 6

The Soviet Union launched the Salyut 7 orbital space station Tuesday, which will be used for a joint Soviet-French manned space mission in June. It replaces the Salyut 6, which has been in space since September 1977. The Tass news agency reported the space station was functioning normally.
