US to sell Israel 75 F-16 fighters

The Reagan admininistration decided to sell Israel 75 advanced F-16 jet fighters worth about $2.5 billion in the largest arms sale to that country in four years, Defense Department officials report.

Another 75 of the single-engine planes were sold to Israel in 1978 and the last of those was delivered this year.

US officials said the proposed sale represented an improvement in relations between the United States and Israel, which became strained after Israel's annexation last year of the Syrian Golan Heights.
