For every taste and budget, a paperback

The Kit Furniture Book, by Lynda Graham-Barber. New York: Pantheon Books. 159 pp. $9.95.

For do-it-your-selfers with aspirations of tackling furniture, ''The Kit Furniture Book'' is a must. Author Lynda Graham-Barber covers four basic periods: colonial, including Windsor; Shaker; Queen Anne; Chippendale; and Contemporary KD (knockdown). Brief chapters on turn-of-the-century kits, clocks and musical instruments, and even house kits are also included.

Each entry includes a black and white photograph as well as pertinent information about each piece of furniture for ordering. Besides introducing the variety of kits on the market, the author gives hints and instructions on glueing, sanding, staining, finishing, waxing, painting, and more. Whether your goal is to build an 18th-century Italian harpsichord or a simple Shaker candle sconce, the rewards are the same: cost, quality, convenience, and that sense of accomplishment that allows you to say, ''I did it myself!''
