Jobless rate steady in June at 9.5 percent

Although June's unemployment rate remained unchanged from May's 9.5 percent, labor economists expect the rate will climb to nearly 10 percent, reports Monitor correspondent Ed Townsend.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics also expects employment figures to continue to weaken, although Dr. Janet Norwood, head of BLS, reported the labor market was ''somewhat weaker'' in May. About 10,427,000 people were unemployed in June, with joblessness among adult men rising to 8.7 percent and among black teen-agers to 52.6 percent.
