Scandinavia reestablishes relations with the Vatican

Sweden, Denmark, and Norway have agreed to establish diplomatic relations with the Vatican.

Swedish Foreign Minister Ola Ullsten said contacts were needed because of the Vatican's growing involvement with the third world and in Eastern European affairs.

The Lutheran Nordic region severed its links with Rome at the time of the Reformation in 1527.
