Hunters and rescuers vie in Everglades deer crisis

Hundreds of hunters crisscrossed the Everglades in airboats Monday on the second day of efforts to thin out a deer herd morooned and short of food from flooding. Conservationists worked against the clock to relocate some of the animals.
State game officials said 1,000 hunters turned out Sunday and killed over 500 deer. The quota for the two-day hunt - 1,500 deer - is not expected to be reached, but officials said the hunt will still be a success because fewer animals will be competing for the sparse food supply.
