Haig says US can shake off third-world hostility

Former Secretary of State Alexander M. Haig Jr. says the myth must be exploded that the United States must live in a continuing state of hostility with the developing world, Monitor correspondent Curtis Sitomer reports.

If we turn a deaf ear on these nations we will ''reradicalize'' them, Mr. Haig told attendees at the American Bar Association's opening assembly here. It was his first public talk since resigning as secretary of state in June. He said that although Marxist-Leninism has been a ''locomotive'' for many have-not nations seeking social change, they are learning it is not the ''engine for economic development.''
