US Open winding up minus Navratilova, Austin
Martina Navratilova saw her Grand Slam bid and a chance to win $500,000 in bonus money go up in smoke at the US Open Tennis Championships. Dousing the hottest player in the women's draw was Navratilova's doubles partner, Pam Shriver, who came from behind to win their quarterfinal match, 2-6, 7-6, 6-2, and hand the top-seeded woman only her second loss of the year.
Navratilova has never won the Open in 10 tries, but had high hopes of doing so after victories at the French Open and Wimbledon earlier this year.
Shriver faces Hana Mandlikova in one of today's semifinal matches. Mandlikova advanced by knocking off defending champion Tracy Austin 4-6, 6-4, 6- 4. Austin was seeking her third US title in four years. Five-time champion Chris Evert Lloyd faces Andrea Jaeger in the other semi.
John McEnroe, who's shooting for a fourth straight singles crown, defeated Gene Mayer in five sets to move into Saturday's men's semifinal action against Ivan Lendl. The winners of the Jimmy Connors-Rodney Harmon and Guillermo Vilas-Tom Gullikson matches will also land semifinal slots.
