Polish authorities weigh closing down Solidarity

The Polish government newspaper indicated that authorities are considering the full dissolution of Solidarity, suspended with the imposition of martial law last December.

The daily Rzeczpospolita said Solidarity had become associated with ''highly negative facts,'' such as conspiratorial underground activity, illegal leaflets, intimidation of loyal citizens, and sabotage. ''Can one imagine that one fine day a trade union with such an overloaded name will simply reappear as if nothing had ever happened in public life?'' Rzeczpospolita asked.
