Swedes try to flush out mystery sub near base
Sweden Tuesday threw all its resources into the hunt for a suspected Soviet spy submarine trapped just off its main naval base on this Baltic island, Monitor contributor Chris Mosey reports.
Two narrow channels out of the Musko base were sealed with submarine netting and thick metal chains and are being patrolled by warships armed with depth charges. Helicopters, too, were dropping depth charges. The incident is considered politically far more serious than last year's, when a Soviet nuclear-armed submarine ran aground off of Karls Krona.
