The Dow Jones industrial average cracked the 1,000 mark Monday for the first time in more than 15 months as the stock market, helped by lower interest rates, continued its autumn rally.

The Dow industrial average, which climbed 20.88 points Friday (Oct. 8) to its highest level since June 26, 1981, stayed above 1,000 most of the day - ahead 25 .29 points to 1012.14 at 3:30 p.m. It soared 79.11 points overall last week, second only to the 81.24-point surge the week ended Aug. 20. The Dow last closed above 1,000 on June 23, 1981.
