Lebanon President makes an emotional UN appeal

In an emotional address to the UN General Assembly, Lebanese President Amin Gemayel called Monday for the immediate, unconditional withdrawal of all foreign forces from his country, saying the people of the Middle East are ready for peace. He also appealed for international aid to rebuild Lebanon's economy.

Meanwhile, Syrian forces fired missiles at Israeli tanks in eastern Lebanon, Israel reported. And Lebanese troops moved into the mountains south of Beirut to prevent further Christian-Muslim fighting.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Israeli opposition leader Shimon Peres ended his drive to oust Prime Minister Menachem Begin as the Knesset reconvened Monday. Nonetheless, many analysts say Mr. Begin's Likud bloc is unlikely to survive the coming inquiry into Israel's role in the Beirut massacre.
