New UN dispute expected over Latin seat on Council

A fierce and protracted battle between Nicaragua and Santo Domingo is expected to begin this week at the United Nations General Assembly, Monitor correspondent Louis Wiznitzer reports.
Both seek to occupy for the next two years the seat allocated to Latin America at the Security Council. But neither nation is expected to receive the two-thirds majority.
In 1979 a similar feud between Cuba and Colombia led to a deadlock. Ultimately they agreed to desist in favor of Mexico. This time Nicaragua and Santo Domingo are expected finally to desist in favor of Peru, whose candidacy for a seat at the Security Council two years from now was an open secret.
