UK press says Navy sent nuclear arms to Falklands

Parliamentary critics are expected to press Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher today (Nov. 4) to say whether nuclear weapons were carried by British warships involved in the Falklands conflict. The British press ran reports saying some British ships carried antisubmarine nuclear bombs, because they had neither time nor opportunity to unload them. Britain had no intention of using the weapons, the reports said, but Thatcher critics say carrying nuclear weapons was a conscious decision.

Queen Elizabeth II opened the 1982-83 session of Parliament Wednesday with a pledge from Mrs. Thatcher's Conservative Party government to stick to economic policies aimed at fighting inflation.
