Acid rain more pervasive than thought, group says

A national conservation group says it has uncovered ''dramatic evidence'' that acid rain can damage more sections of North America than earlier studies have shown.

The Izaak Walton League of American says in its report that the American South and West are susceptible to acid rain damage. Previous studies focused on acid rain damage in the northeast United States and southeast Canada. Acid rain is formed in the atmosphere when sulfur dioxides, nitrogen oxides, and water mix. It has been linked to widespread environmental damage, including the killing of acquatic life in acidified lakes and streams, as well as slowing forest growth.
