Gift ideas -- art, literature, books for children; Impressionist water colors, drawings; Watercolors and Drawings of the French Impressionists, by Horst Keller. New York: Harry N. Abrams. 178 pp. $60.
Another book on Impressionist watercolors and drawings can only be justified on the basis of superb reproductions, and the inclusion of works not previously reproduced. The illustrations in this book are indeed quite excellent - and I found several unfamiliar items on its pages.
Among the latter are a superb watercolor landscape sketch by Millet that comes close to the level of Rembrandt's studies of nature, a lovely mountain view by Dore (which is quite a surprise), and a powerful seascape by Isabey. Also new to me were watercolors and pastels by Jongkind, Cezanne, Bonnard, and Vuillard. And there are intriguing atypical works by Daumier and Puvis de Chavannes.
The text, however, is a bit too general and simplistic - although it can probably do no harm.
