Churches' power to veto nearby bars is overruled

The Supreme Court, taking a strong stand on separation of church and state, struck down, 8 to 1, a Massachusetts liquor zoning law that gave churches the power to veto alcohol sales in their neighborhoods. The justices upheld a ruling that the law - similar to ones in nine other states - was unconstitutional because it entangled government and religion.

In other actions, the court upheld, 6 to 3, a federal court's authority in a voting rights case to order changes in the system of electing city commissioners in Port Arthur, Texas, and ruled 9 to 0, in a case involving the National Right to Work Committee, that corporate funds may not be used to solicit contributions for political-action committees.
