West German leader calls relations with US 'firm'

West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl said he was satisfied that friendly relations with the United states were once again ''firm and close.''

In a New Year's message broadcast by West German overseas radio, Kohl said his November visit to Washington, and in particular his talks with President Reagan, had convincingly confirmed ''the conformity of our ideals and goals.''

Mr. Kohl said West Germany did not want new US missiles on its soil, but would have to deploy them if the Soviet Union did not dismantle similar weapons.
