New York blasts -- work of the FALN, police say
The FALN, a Puerto Rican separatist guerrilla group, probably planted the four bombs that exploded here on New Year's Eve, damaging federal buildings and police headquarters and injuring three police officers, investigators say.
FALN (Armed Forces of National Liberation) has claimed responsibility for about 125 explosions over the last eight years, officials say. All of the blasts have been accompanied by demands for freedom for Puerto Rico, a US commonwealth whose residents are American citizens but cannot vote in national elections. According to law enforcement agencies, the terrorist group has little support among Puerto Ricans on the island or in this country.
