Truckers advised to travel together to avoid violence

Truckers were advised Wednesday to travel in caravans as snipers and vandals forced more independent truck drivers to join the three-day-old strike. Drivers who defied the strike armed themselves, or depended on protection from state police and Teamsters Union members.

Incidents of violence have been reported in 30 states since the strike began Monday, including one fatality. Officials at New York City's produce-distribution centers said spot shortages would soon be seen in stores if the strike continues.

The Independent Trucker's Association, which called the strike to protest increased fuel taxes and higher road-use fees, claims 50,000 to 60,000 truckers have joined the strike.
