US reveals new Soviet-arms data

The Soviet Union is ''developing the capability to fight a prolonged nuclear war'' with its strategic weapons and seeking ''world domination'' through the production and deployment of its conventional armaments, Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger said.

Releasing a Pentagon report on Soviet military power, Mr. Weinberger outlined previously classified data on new Soviet weapons, such as the T-80 tank, Blackjack strategic bomber, and Typhoon submarine. Monitor correspondent Brad Knickerbocker reports that the defense secretary also revealed that the Soviet Union now has deployed 351 SS-20 intermediate-range nuclear missiles. Mr. Weinberger denied recent reports suggesting that Soviet ICBMs are less accurate than the Pentagon has estimated. And he played down any apparent slowdown in Soviet military growth revealed by United States intelligence officials as a probable pause before Moscow begins building a new generation of armaments.

From a disarmament conference in Ottawa, meanwhile, came the news that the world spends $1 million a minute on arms. Commonwealth Secretary-General Shridath Ramphal of Guyana predicted that sum would double by the turn of the century.
