Begin won't call elections despite loss in parliament

Prime Minister Menachem Begin rejected demands for new elections despite a stinging parliamentary defeat, Israel Radio said. Earlier this week, the parliament selected the opposition Labor nominee, Chaim Herzog, for president over Mr. Begin's nominee. The loss had prompted several members of Mr. Begin's governing Likud bloc to demand that he dissolve the coalition and call new elections.
