New York commuter strikes near end

Commuter railroad strikes in New Jersey and New York appeared to be nearing an end after walkouts that have inconvenienced 160,000 daily commuters in the New York area.

Monitor labor correspondent Ed Townsend reports that New Jersey Transit and the United Transportation Union reached a contract settlement. NJ Tranist trains were set to roll today barring a threat from a dissident group of 150 UTU crew members to post picket lines. In a second strike against Metro-North, New York, Gov. Mario Cuomo warned of steps to end the walkout if there was no negotiated settlement early this week.
