Glemp calls for unity in divided Poland
Cardinal Jozef Glemp issued a dramatic appeal for action to reconcile Poland's divided people. His was the first reaction by the Roman Catholic Church to an appeal issued by underground Solidarity leaders last week. They appealed for worker rallies on May Day independent of the formal Communist celebrations. Cardinal Glemp called for dialogue and goodwill between the militant workers and the authorities.
Earlier, however, the authorities announced the arrest of two senior fugitive activists of the banned union. Jerzy Jastrzebowski, a member of the union's national commission, and Zbigniew Belz, a member of the union's powerful watchdog body, were arrested.
