Israelis and Syrians sound more warlike

Tension grew between Israel and Syria. The State-run Damascus radio accused Israel of staging provocative military exercises on the Golan Heights and said an Israeli attack on Syria was imminent. It said two days of exercises coincided with a reinforcement of Israeli troops in the Bekaa Valley in eastern Lebanon, where they confront Syrian forces.

Meanwhile, Israeli news reports said Israel had put its Army on alert in response to increased Syrian military activity in Syria and Lebanon. Israel's Labor Party warned that another war was round the corner. Earlier, Prime Minister Menachem Begin said the Golan Heights, annexed in 1981, would remain under Israeli administration.
