Walesa calls on regime to talk with Solidarity

Lech Walesa declared Poland's May Day demonstrations successful and called on Polish authorities to begin talks with his banned union. Meanwhile, a Krakow newspaper reported that one man was killed in the demonstrations in support of the banned Solidarity union. An estimated 100,000 Solidarity supporters took to the streets of at least 20 Polish cities that erupted in violent clashes with riot police, who made hundreds of arrests.
