US mayors ask Congress for road repair funds

The nation's mayors called on Congress to provide billions of dollars in federal funds to repair decaying roads and bridges in America's cities. Measures opposing the deregu-lation of ''old'' natural gas and calling for federal flexibility in enforcing the Clean Air Act were also approved during a meeting of the resolutions committee of the US Conference of Mayors in Denver.

Mayor Vincent J. Thomas of Norfolk, Va., who sponsored the resolution on repairing the ''urban infrastructure,'' said the measure sought $5 billion a year in federal aid. Those funds were tied to a 10-year, $50 billion program being considered in Congress.
