Your influence on the world economy
The average individual may feel that he has no influence over world economic conditions, but is only influenced by them. To most of us the economic scene is so complex that we wonder whether governments and those in charge of making economic decisions can really do much, if anything, to control things. Pushing the economy into shape in one area may push it out of shape in another, so interrelated are the factors involved.
We may think, as a result, that we are justified in feeling helpless and frustrated. Frustration, however, is a waste of our time. The individual can contribute to the improvement of the economic scene, and a first step is discerning the mental nature of the economy.
In world economics we are involved with the flow of capital, and with the distribution of goods and services. It isn't difficult to see that this flow is impelled by intentions and attitudes. Capital, goods, and services don't move themselves. They are moved by the thoughts and intents of men and women. The pushing and pulling of economies could be viewed as the manifestation of the pushing and pulling among various human interests and desires.
Once we see the basically mental nature of the economy, the next step, the most important and effective step, is to firmly recognize the higher law of supply and demand - the law of Principle, God, in which the abundance of His love amply satisfies each legitimate need of man.
Christian Science shows that lack is the effect of accepting limited mortal views, and it reveals the practical spiritual reasoning that overcomes such limitations. This reasoning begins with God, divine Love, as the ruling Principle of all existence.
Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy n1 encourages us with this statement: ''Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need. It is not well to imagine that Jesus demonstrated the divine power to heal only for a select number or for a limited period of time, since to all mankind and in every hour, divine Love supplies all good.'' n2

To recognize that divine Love is supplying all good at every moment is not just sweet, abstract thinking. It is a powerful, prayerful approach that is able to neutralize (in individual as well as collective human thought) the fear, greed, and inequity that indicate spiritual poverty, and to replace them with Christly love toward our fellowman. Divine Love requires that the affluence of Love be seen and felt in our hearts. Then the demonstration of security and fairness in our own lives will nurture these qualities in the world economy as well.
Prayerful acknowledgment of Love's provision can open mental paths that are constructive. This was demonstrated to me a number of years ago when I saw an opportunity to help my community. My personal economic situation seemed totally incapable of supporting the venture I had in mind. But as I acknowledged divine Love's affluence and ever-presence, unexpected financial support for the project began to appear. The vision for the project was fulfilled, and hundreds of people received help with problems they were facing.
As we recognize that ''divine Love supplies all good,'' we are encouraged to see that ''all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose,'' n3 as the Bible promises.
n3 Romans 8:28.
Through this understanding we will be forwarding (however modestly) equity and progress in the world. Gradually we can expect to see economic factors working together more effectively for the benefit of all peoples and nations.
No matter how insignificant our prayer in this direction may seem, it will be as powerful as it is sincere. It will help both ourselves and others and will contribute to our reception of the freely flowing spiritual ideas that are loving, fearless, and governed by God alone.
