Fighting indicates failure of Lebanese peace effort

Syrian forces and Druze Muslim militiamen bombarded Christian sectors of Beirut and areas around the airport. At least eight people were killed and 30 were wounded, including the commander of the Italian peacekeeping force, who suffered minor cuts. Flights continued despite the attacks.

The escalation in violence followed efforts by President Amin Gemayel to reach a national conciliation with the ''National Salvation Front'' opposition group, which includes Druze leader Walid Jumblatt.

The shelling of the capital came amid renewed battles between Druze and Christian militiamen in the Shouf mountains overlooking the city.
