A few tricks to keep Halloween safe

With Halloween just around the corner, the National Board of Realtors makes the following suggestions to help prevent destructive ''tricks'' or acts of vandalism:

* Use whatever outdoor lighting you have, such as porch lights, garage or carport lights, and patio or yard lights. Your home should be well lit inside and out.

* To prevent theft, clear your yard of such items as outdoor furniture, grills, garden hoses, etc. Lock your car and any outdoor storage facilities.

* Encourage community leaders to sponsor trick-or-treat ventures in daylight or early evening hours. Positive community programs can redirect the energies of young people.

* For maximum protection, suggest adult supervision of youthful door-to-door visitors. If you do not have small children of your own, volunteer some time to be with neighborhood children.
