Glenn proposes delay on European missiles
John Glenn, one of the leading candidates for the Democratic presidential nomination, proposed a temporary delay in the scheduled US deployment of cruise missiles to Europe.
Senator Glenn called the ground-launched cruise missile, which will begin to be stationed in Europe within the next few months, ''the single most potentially destabilizing weapon that exists.'' The missiles are small and can be easily hidden. This would make arms control agreements almost impossible to enforce, Glenn charges.
The Ohio senator, who is second behind Walter Mondale in opinion polls of Democratic voters, has been under pressure from Mr. Mondale on arms control issues. Glenn opposed the SALT II treaty negotiated by President Jimmy Carter on grounds compliance by the Soviets could not be readily verified at that time.
