40,000 march in Manila demanding Marcos resignone photo

Corazon Aquino, the widow of opposition leader Benigno Aquino, led 40,000 people - mostly women - in a solemn march Thursday demanding the resignation of President Ferdinand Marcos. The march, which was organized by the National Organization of Women, brought the Makati financial district to a virtual standstill.

Mr. Marcos went into seclusion Wednesday, but a presidential statement said he was setting up a new commission to end charges of an official ''whitewash'' in Aquino's murder. Opposition leaders said they would have nothing to do with a new presidential inquiry into the Aquino assassination until Marcos resigns.
