Leader of Grenadian coup reportedly held on US ship

The Barbados government announced Monday that Gen. Hudson Austin, leader of Grenada's short-lived military government, had been captured by US invasion troops and was being questioned on an Americanship.

Also arrested in the last two days were several members of the 16-man military council that ruled Grenada for five days, from the assassination of Prime Minister Maurice Bishop to the start of the US-led invasion of the island. Several of them were turned in by Grenadian civilians.

The arrests are expected to reduce the threat of guerrilla resistance from the island's rural areas, reports Monitor staff writer Dennis Volman. Many members of the council were trained in Cuba and were among the military elite.
