Graduate education in trouble, study says
The National Commission on Student Financial Assistance has released a study finding significant trouble in the nation's graduate schools. Citing the importance of graduate study and research for the nation's social and economic well-being, as well as its security, the report noted significant erosion in the number of graduate students as well as the quality of work being done.
The report, focusing on the federal role in redressing the shortcomings, lists a 10-point agenda for action, including increased funding to maintain and enhance equipment in graduate schools; enhanced quality of scholarly libraries and efforts to ensure that valuable collections are maintained; and a major effort to attract and retain promising young scholars as faculty members.
