Miners may return to AFL-CIO fold

The United Mine Workers, an independent union since 1947, may be on its way back into AFL-CIO's ''house of labor,'' as part of the long-term plans of Richard L. Trumka, the new UMW president, to strengthen his weakened union.

Lane Kirkland, head of the 95-union AFL-CIO, was the first federation president invited to a UMW convention when he addressed the opening session of this year's meeting here Dec. 12. To repeated applause, he urged the mine union to join the federation in a political fight ''to rid the White House and the Congress of Reaganites, Reaganism, and Reaganomics.'' At the same time, Mr. Kirkland invited the UMW to affiliate with AFL-CIO.
