Indian poll results could prompt early national vote

Political observers in India speculated Prime Minister Indira Gandhi could call national elections before March after her ruling Congress (I) Party received mixed reviews from voters in key by-elections.

In two northern Indian strong-holds her party was trounced, but it emerged triumphant in polls in three other states. Opposition parties took five of 14 contested seats in the national Parliament, while the Congress (I) Party took the rest. Political commentators had predicted results of the polls would be a major influence on Gandhi when she decides on a date for national elections, due sometime before the end of January 1985.
