UN chief will visit Africa, encourage drought relief

UN Secretary General Perez de Cuellar will embark this Friday on a three-week tour that will take him to 12 African countries. The main purpose of the trip is to try to encourage international agencies, Western Asian nations, and wealthy Arab governments to focus their attention on the plight of 22 African countries whose economies are in shambles and where food emergencies exist.

As a result of the last drought - and, in some cases, of civil wars and foreign invasion - ''the water supply in these countries has dwindled to almost nothing, and this affects every aspect of life in countries such as Ghana, Tanzania, Uganda, and Mozambique,'' a high UN offical said.
