Polish officials trim plans for big food-price increase

Details published in national newspapers Thursday indicated the new plan includes hikes of more than 9 percent, as opposed to the original proposal for increases averaging 10 to 15 percent. It appeared prices would not actually be marked up before Feb. 1.

At the same time, the government announced its ''consultations'' with the public over food prices were over, with the new increases awaiting only formal approval by military leader Gen. Wojciech Jaruzelski and his Cabinet before taking effect.
